Gastroenterologist Questions Rectal Bleeding

What can cause rectal bleeding?

For about a month, I noticed that I have some blood after passing a bowel movement. What can actually cause this? I could see constipation, but I've only been constipated a few times.

Many possibilities. Do NOT ignore these symptoms. See your doctor please.
There are many causes of rectal bleeding and you should be evaluated by a colon and rectal specialist.
Most common causes of rectal bleeding include diverticulosis, angiodysplasia (which is a type of malformation making blood vessels prone to bleeding) and polyps, as well as more severe disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and malignancy. One of the most common causes, however, especially in persons with constipation or after a bowel movement is internal hemorrhoids.
Bleeding with otherwise normal bowel movement is usually from hemorrhoids. An endoscopy exam or colonoscopy can prove it. Don't forget that if you are over 50, you need a screening colonoscopy whether you have bleeding or not.
