Bulging discs are not uncommon. Avoid any exercise (or any other activity, for that matter) that involves lifting and twisting. Do exercises that strengthen your core muscles.
FIRSTLY, IF THERE IS A POSITIVE DIAGNOSIS FOR BULGING DISC? SEE A QUALIFIED CHIROPRACTIC DOCTOR BEFORE DOING ANY EXERCISES. ONLY SPECIFIC SCIENTIFIC CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT WILL HELP YOU. NO EXERCISES FOR AT LEAST 6 WEEK, AND IF THERE IS MEASURABLE IMPROVEMENTS, AFTER TX BEGINS
Find a chiropractic for adjustments and decompression!!! We are upright all day long so want to decompress joints! This will help a lot!!
Good luck!
Avoid all exercises that may compress the disc such as Military Presses, Leg Press, Dead Lifts. Also, avoid any exercises that may shear or torque the discs such as Russian twists, Traditional Sit-ups. You can continue with planks and exercises that do not compress or torque the area in question.
Hope that helps as a starting point to your question. There are numerous ways to train to strengthen your core, neck and/or your mid to upper back depending on the area affected. My answer is more directed at a Lumbar disc, but avoiding any compressive exercises is key.
All of them until it heals.
Personally I’ve found exercises that involve a lot of impact, like running, and things like deadlifts and weighted squats to make bulging disc issues worse. In general, I’d switch to lower weights, higher reps with disc issues. The more you have to strain, the more pressure you’ll create in your abdomen which makes the discs bulge more.
I have treated many patients successfully with herniated and/or bulging discs. Orthopedic or Neurologic consultation is important. Care must be taken to insure no aggravation of the symptoms with both the examination and treatment. The Doctor of Chiropractic must carefully monitor the patient’s progress. There are red flags that if they appear indicate a potential surgical case. Many individuals have herniated and/or bulging Disc and have no symptoms.

You will want to avoid exercise in which the spine is flexed forward, especially when under a load. Mostly you will be safe if you use lighter weight and execute proper form in all of your exercises. Do NOT let your low back round forward, keep the arch intact.
