What happens if a UTI spreads to your kidneys?

My 13 year old daughter has a UTI. I want to know what happens if a UTI spreads to your kidneys?

When UTI spreads to the kidney it causes kidney infection and presents with fever pelvic pains with flank pains. There is continued pain when on pees. Patient way require to go to the ER immediately for treatment to avoid complications.
It's not uncommon for a UTI to start in the bladder and spread upwards. If this is the case, it can potentially need to a kidney infection called pyelonephritis. If left untreated, this can potentially lead to kidney damage among a wide array of other things such as spread throughout the blood.
