Cardiologist Questions Open Heart Surgery

What is open heart surgery?

My grandpa is scheduled for open heart surgery next week, and I'm not sure what's really involved. I know it's for a coronary artery bypass graft, but what does that mean? What are they going to do? And also, what's the recovery like?

They will take some vein and/or artery and sew one end to the heart artery and the other end to the aorta ie bypass the heart artery blockage
To open the chest to see the heart, put him on a heart lung bypasss machine, and then bypass any blockages with either arteries or veins.

He of course will be completely asleep and know nothing about it. It is a big operation and it does take some weeks sometimes months to recover completely, but this type of surgery is very common these days, and people feel so much better when it is all over.
