Bacteria that are found in the mouth can easily find their way to the blood stream during dental work. Once in the blood, the endocardium (lining of the heart) can get seeded by these organisms and cause infection.
Not all but some dental procedures may cause infection of heart valves called endocarditis. The tooth area may be heavily infected. The dental procedure releases thousands of bacteria into the blood stream, &. bacteria settle on the heart valve.
They can if you have a valve issue to start with. If you have a murmur, get it checked out first. In general, though, in healthy people, no worries.
It is rare. The cleaning process removes bacteria and sheds them into the body where they can set up shop on the heart valves.
