Pediatrician Questions Attention Deficit Disorder

Why would a child be inattentive?

My son, aged 9, is off in his own world all the time. He doesn't even respond to his name unless I call it multiple times. What causes children to be inattentive?

Children are absorbed into their own world often especially if they are engaged in play, worse with video games. This is selective inattention. If you suspect the inattentiveness is universal, i.e. not just around you but around other people including the teachers, the coaches etc. It's better to seek consult with your pediatrician.
Make sure his hearing is good. Most of the time they are daydreaming. If it is interfering with school work he may need workup for ADD or absence seizures
