Why the increased sugar intake?

An article published in 2016 by the New York Times recently suggested that our increased intake of sugars is not only due to our cravings, but also due to unsavory marketing tactics by corporations looking to boost sales. One online resource that is authored by a group of scientists from the University of California, San Francisco suggested that the average American consumes about 20 teaspoons of sugar each day, which equals 82 grams each day or 66 pounds of sugar each year. Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA) suggest amounts that are far under the average consumption.
