How Your Life Has Changed with Lymphoma

Ruth Reece: How Your Life Has Changed with Lymphoma
HEALTHJOURNEYS

How and when did you receive the diagnosis?

I was diagnosed in 2015 with large and small cell lymphoma. I received 3 years of RCHOP and maintenance chemo. I was diagnosed when I was 69 years old. I had gone to the ER thinking I had a kidney stone. They did a CT and found swollen lymph nodes on my omentum. I received care at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes Sr. Louis. In 2007 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer, had a hysterectomy and lymph node dissection and had no further problems.

Have your life goals and aspirations changed since the diagnosis?

My goals are to continue my volunteer work as a nurse and to look at every day as a gift. Also, to be thankful for my support system.

What is the best advice you would give to someone recently diagnosed?

It may seem like chemo takes forever but when you are finished you have a tremendous feeling of relief. But remember each day gets easier and easier. Each day during chemo get up, shower and get dressed. My best friend gave me this advice and it was the best advice I can give you. Buy the the prettiest wig you can find and wear it every day. And above all, try to maintain a positive attitude. Remember positive thoughts bring positive outcomes. After chemo I was diagnosed with a nonmalignant brain tumor. Had it removed and doing great.
