  • What type of mattress is best for side sleepers with back pain?

I'm sorry you have back pain at your age. Some people think a hard mattress is better and some think a soft mattress is better. You could try putting a small pillow between your knees for side sleeping and make sure your head is in line with your spine, so it's not crunching your neck or lifting your head up too high when you are sleeping. Some mattress companies offer a money back guarantee. I recommended going to a mattress store, telling them about your problem and asking what they might recommend from their stock. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you.  READ MORE

I'm happy someone of your age is concerned with the health of the neck, there are 3 phases of chiropractic care; 1 Relieving the acute problem 2 Rectifying the imbalance 3 Keeping your neck in as good a shape as you can throughout your life. That's called maintenance care.  The amount of time it takes is really your whole life because things happen on many days that put you out of balance. Of course, you can help keep your neck aligned with good posture, appropriate exercise, and healthy diet and lifestyle habits.  READ MORE

  • What is the difference between frozen shoulder and shoulder impingement?

A frozen shoulder means you can't lift your arm above your head. That is generally a problem with the subscapularis muscle. Shoulder impingement can relate to muscle, tendon, ligament or bone problems that generally cause pain with the movement depending on the reason for the problem. READ MORE

  • When should I be concerned about calf pain?

Good question. It could be an indication of deep vein thrombosis. I recommend you consult with your medical doctor or medical professional asap. There could be other causes for your calf pain. But a deep vein thrombosis is a life threatening condition so get that check immediately. If it turns out not to be a problem write back and I can recommend other possibilities and solutions. • Should I sleep without a pillow if my neck hurts?

I would not recommend that unless you stay still on your back and are comfortable without a pillow. When you turn on your side, your neck will compress the nerves on that side if you don't have a pillow to support your head in a neutral position with your spine. I know it can be very difficult to find the right pillow. Below is a similar question I answered recommending a neck pillow that I use. They can be, with any pillow you want to strive for a neutral spine position, whether you are laying on your back or on your side. There is no good way to lay on your stomach and sleep, that's bad for you. My favorite pillow is a Therapeutic Pillow. they come in soft and original based on your preference and they come in at least 4 sizes. They offer a measuring rule to figure out what size you need based on the distance between your mastoid process and shoulder, you might check that one out. READ MORE

  • How painful is frozen shoulder manipulation?

The most common cause for frozen shoulder is a tight subscapularis muscle. The most effective way to fix that is by pressing onto the front side of your shoulder blade, which is accessed with you laying on your back and the therapist pressing under your armpit into this muscle. Because the muscle is too tight it hurts. Work with your therapist / chiropractor and let them know when the pressure is too much. Exhale while they are pressing and focus on something else like your breath or a happy memory while being in communication with your chiropractor about your pain level. You can get through it without a problem and you will be happy with the results when you can raise your arm higher and or reach behind your back more easily.  READ MORE

  • Is manipulation good for frozen shoulder?

Definitely yes, in my practice I find I need to do deep tissue work on the subscapularis muscle- on the underside of your shoulder blade. It doesn't feel good but patients are always able to lift their arm higher from the back after that treatment. Dr. Linda READ MORE

  • What is the gun that chiropractors use?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'gun'. There are a number of adjusting instruments that chiropractors use. One is called Activator, another is an Impulse instrument. There is another one that I don't know the name of, chiropractors that do upper cervical (upper neck ) adjustments, use on their patients lying on their side. I hope that helps. READ MORE

  • Can a misaligned pelvis cause sciatica?

Absolutely. Your sciatic nerve originates in your lower back, passes through your pelvis through to your toes. Problems anywhere along that route, including pelvic misalignment can cause sciatica. If the pain starts in your butt cheeks, you may have condition Piriformis Syndrome. That is when you have a problem with your piriformis or gemelli muscle group, compressing the sciatic nerve. If that's your problem, ask the chiropractor you are seeing if they they know how to fix piriformis syndrome. Dr. Linda READ MORE

  • Does going to a chiropractor feel good?

I always feel good after my chiropractic adjustment and my patients tell me they feel a lot better. Sometimes the places the chiropractor has to work are sore or tender, that is because there is congestion in those areas leading to pain and stiffness. But once the therapy is over, without that congestion you will feel better. You can always speak up and let your chiropractor know if anything is too harsh or uncomfortable. Dr. Linda READ MORE

  • Is it bad to go to the chiropractor too often?

Good question. It depends. If your ligaments are too loose and you go to your chiropractor (who cracks your bones) there, you could be going too often. Many chiropractors, like me, include a variety of health and wellness options, depending what they offer. I don't see how you could go too often for that.  Best, Dr. Linda READ MORE

  • How long should you wait between chiropractic visits?

That depends. There are 3 types of care: acute, corrective and maintenance care. You need to be seen more often when you're in pain. Maybe 2 or 3 times a week. Corrective care to help stabilize your body once you are out of pain maybe once every 1 to 2 weeks. And maintenance care, my patients choose to see me every 2 to 4 weeks. I hope that helps. With over four decades of experience in her field, she has helped thousands find their way back to health at her private practice in San Rafael, California.

Graduating from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Theater Dance in 1974 was a peak experience, especially since even before her cap and gown ceremony, Dr. Berry had a job as a dancer and choreographer with The American Dance Asylum. Increasing her personal safety was also a goal so she trained with Master Hidy Ochai in Washin Ryu Karate. She was able to achieve the purple belt status.

At the age of 24, Dr. Berry was paralyzed from an automobile accident. Released from the hospital in a wheelchair, she used long leg braces to stand and underarm crutches to walk. Before her dream life was taken away, she was a modern dancer, choreographer, and purple belt in karate. She rose up from her wheelchair to help others heal as a chiropractor, nutritionist, and trauma healing specialist.

In 1982, she earned her Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree and has been in private practice since then. She treats and guides patients to get out of pain and back to a life that they can enjoy.

She teaches classes and speaks offering resources and knowledge to coax patients to their next level of health and well-being.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns, including neck pain and back pain. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself without the use of medication or surgery.

Among her philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Berry has served as an usher for the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera.

On a more personal note, her favorite place to vacation is by the water. Outside of the office, she enjoys dancing, sewing, cooking, being in nature, swimming, and gardening. Her favorite professional publication is Medscape.
