Already well-known as a wrinkle fighter, Botox has proven to be a multi-use powerhouse. Botox, or botulinum toxin, is only one of several neurotoxin brands available on the market, but by far the best known. In fact, this entire category of medicines is often called “Botox.” In its most common use, it works by blocking nerve signals in muscles (usually in the face), thus decreasing muscle activity and preventing lines caused by movement. But there is so much more to this versatile little protein – read on to discover some of its many uses.

Migraines

Botox is FDA-approved to prevent headaches and migraines. When injected in very specific points in the head and neck, it can improve headache pains after a few days, with relief lasting 3 months or more.

Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be a very difficult and embarrassing problem for up to a third of the population. By blocking nerve signals to the glands that make you sweat, Botox is very effective in reducing sweat for at least 6 months, with some patients seeing results for a full year. At our center, we’ve performed this procedure successfully in the underarms, palms, even the face – and saved a lot of nice shirts and white t-shirts along the way!

Slimming the face

According to current standards of beauty, the ideal feminine face should be smooth and oval-shaped. In most women, enlargement of the masseter or jaw muscle can cause a square or more masculine jawline. When we inject Botox into the masseter, the large muscle will shrink, giving a more feminine contour. As an added bonus, it can improve pain from TMJ dysfunction and jaw clenching/grinding.

Hair growth

Adding to the growing list of uses, Botox can be effective for alopecia, or hair loss. When injected into the scalp, it can relax scalp muscles, and increase blood flow and delivery of nutrients to hair. One study published in 2010 showed that men treated with Botox to their scalp had a mild increase in hair counts and reduction in hair loss. The jury’s still out on this one as the research continues, and in the meantime there are many proven treatments for male and female pattern baldness.

Microneedling cocktail

Microneedling is not just a beauty trend, there is scientific evidence that it really works. The procedure can smooth wrinkles, flatten scars, and even out skin tone by boosting collagen production. Also called collagen induction therapy, the tiny needles increase the absorption of products applied to the skin. There are many serums on the market for microneedling that contain skin-brightening vitamins and hydrating hyaluronic acid, but the Botox facial takes it a step further. When Botox is mixed with the microneedling serum, it can decrease oil and sebum production and improve redness and rosacea.

With the meteoric rise of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, new and exciting breakthroughs are coming out at a dizzying pace. Dr Kieu is committed to staying on top of the latest developments, and can help tailor a treatment that works just for you.
