Treatment may not last as long as you fear and the physician can help your friend prevent future infections in the area, without necessarily going to the expense of cosmetic repair. Many providers will work with a patient to set up a payment plan.

I recommend you see your primary care physician or audiologist for an evaluation of the ear canal. Your symptoms could be due to something as simple as ear wax buildup. This can usually be handled quickly in the office. If the ear canal is clear, the next step is testing for middle ear issues, such as fluid or infection behind the ear drum. This test is can be performed in an audiologist's office. If a middle ear problem is identified, medical treatment may be needed. If testing rules out a middle ear problem, a full hearing evaluation would be necessary.

If your friend's hearing loss has occurred very recently, she should see an Ear, Nose and Throat physician as soon as possible. Rapid treatment with steroids can sometimes restore function from a sudden hearing loss. A full hearing evaluation is needed. If no improvement is gained from steroid treatment, hearing aids or a cochlear implant are recommended.

Most likely there is fluid in the middle ear space as a result of your recent illness and that will clear on its own within a couple of weeks. However, there is also the chance that this is a sudden sensorineural hearing loss that requires immediate attention. I would strongly recommend you see an audiologist or ENT physician ASAP to determine the nature of the hearing loss. If this is a sensorineural loss there are treatments that can help recover the hearing, but they need to be started very quickly. When you call for an appointment inform the scheduler that you have experienced a sudden drop in hearing. He/she should schedule you to see the professional within 24 hours.

Tinnitus following an exposure to very loud sound is a sign of acoustic injury. If the buzzing is gone, your ears have recovered from the injury this time. However, be aware that repeated insults may result in a permanent hearing loss in your future. I strongly recommend that you reduce the volume on your ear buds and use hearing protection anytime you will exposed to loud noise, such as from a lawn mower, in the future. You want to protect your hearing for the long run.
