What are the Benefits of Pilates?

This method, introduced by Joseph Pilates, is in high demand and everybody seems to be practicing it in one form or the other. And many seem to be happy with the improvement they have in flexibility, abdominal strength and range of motion after starting with Pilates. What is Pilates? It is a series of exercises based on other physical activity forms like callisthenics, yoga, and ballet. It is known to improve flexibility, muscle strength and balance considerably and includes a range of motion, which makes a difference to the body.

One of the most attractive features of this method is the development of body awareness in the person. By focusing on the activities, it in a way trains the mind to bring in coordination in the body. People who practice Pilates will be aware of how to stand, sit or move around, and relate the postures to the injuries or pains that they had earlier. Experts in this method strongly believe that strengthening the core is very essential in controlling the conditions. This method stresses on proper breathing and accurate alignment of the spine and pelvic region helping in efficient movements and reducing stress.

Pilates is associated with a strong, healthy back and body – the concept referred to as ‘core strength’. So more than just a flat stomach it emphasizes on flexibility, strength, and functionality of muscles in the body. Trainers of this method help us to achieve a better body symmetry and a better control of the body. Thus they insist on working the whole body during movement rather than concentrating on one particular part which makes some of the muscles stronger while others become weaker. Imbalance in muscles is one of the most common causes of chronic back pain.

The range of exercises in Pilates personal training helps to improve muscle elasticity and joint flexibility. This reduces the risk of injury as against the traditional exercises that add bulk to muscles. As all the muscles are evenly conditioned, routine activities become easier and performance in sports improves. More than anything else, chances of injury reduces considerably.

Pilates may not be very efficient in removing those extra pounds in the body. Thus, Pilates helps in changing the symmetry and coordination of the body without affecting the weight. But as the body tone changes it is possible that you may look as if you have lost weight.
