There are many different agents used in combination for modern anesthesia. Certain opioids are frequently one component of that combination. There are ways in which an anesthetic agent can be administered however in which opioid medication may or may not be included. The bet manner in which to address this concern however, is to have a discussion with your Physician Anesthesiologist prior to the administration of anesthesia for your specific reason, whether it is a surgical procedure or something else.
Opioids are usually a part of a balanced anesthetic, which includes using medicines from different classes that work on different receptors to achieve anesthesia and pain relief. They don’t have to be used but it becomes more difficult without their use to provide a complete anesthetic.
Yes. They are used as adjunct to your anesthetic and to control postoperative pain.
