COVID vaccine side effects?

I received my first dose of Moderna vaccine on 8/14/21. I had a mild reaction on my left deltoid muscle (vaccine site) which resulted in redness, warmth, itchiness, soreness and inflammation. I spoke to the pharmacist that gave the injection, she said it would subside in about 3 days. It did subside, I was fine by Wednesday. On Friday 8/20/21 I began to feel some itchiness on the injection site, I left it alone. The itchiness was still still there on Saturday and by Saturday night, the same swollen, red, warm, lump came back. I've taken Zyrtec to alleviate itchiness. No current flu like symptoms.

Is this of concern after the initial reaction was gone?

Thanks for the question.

Your body's immune system is responding to the vaccine with two different types of immunity, one immediate and one delayed. There is no danger involved in either. Subsequent injections may cause a more or less severe local reaction. There is no reason not to obtain the follow-up injection, but discuss it with your doctor.

No, this delayed swelling and redness has been described. It will resolve and you can take the second injection and you may have the same reaction - or not.
