Do they give you general anesthesia to check your colon?

I will have a colonoscopy. Do they give you general anesthesia to check your colon?

Typically a colonoscopy is done under deep sedation. Patients are deeply sedated so they tolerate the procedure
Hi there,

Usually not. They give deep sedation using an anesthetic medication, propofol, through the vein. The difference between deep sedation and general anesthesia is breathing. In deep sedation for a colonoscopy, the patient is completely out, but he still can breathe on his own, and no breathing tube is needed; on the other hand, the general anesthesia will require a breathing tube and mechanical ventilation. In summary, you don't need general anesthesia for colonoscopy, but you definitely need deep sedation because it's an uncomfortable procedure, and you should be completely out.
Hopefully, you find this helpful; stay safe!!
Usually colonoscopies are done under sedation. Hopefully yours will be quick and easy. It’s not too uncomfortable so you will be ok. Best of luck!!!
It is usually called sedation. In my opinion it is really a general anesthetic with intravenous propofol.
No, normally conscious sedation.
No, the sedation for colonoscopy is usually IV only, sometimes called deep sedation. General anesthesia is reserved for patients with particular risks of sedation related to underlying medical comorbidities.
