Just like a tooth.
There are nerves that run on either side of the finger at the base. A small amount of local anesthetic can be injected on each side and the finger will be numb.
Usually you numb the digital nerves one on each side of the finger at the knuckle. This would work to sew up a small wound or other procedures of short duration.
This can be done with local anesthetic. The anesthetic is injected around the base of the finger. This is commonly referred to as a digital block
By injection in the finger of local anesthetic such as Lidocaine to make it numb.
The simplest way is what is called a "digital block", done by the surgeon, with local anesthetic (numbing medication). If there is any question that you are anxious or stressed related to the surgery, the anesthesiologist can also give you sedation medication through an IV (intravenous) catheter.
A finger can be anesthesetized by performing a digital block where local anesthetic is injected on both sides of the base of the finger.
