The way it works is that during the endoscopy the gastroenterologist will take a biopsy. The tissue that was biopsied is then observed under the microscope. For celiac disease, there are specific characteristics of the tissue that may be found.
Biopsies of small bowel are taken that are gold standard for celiac
Small intestinal biopsies can confirm the changes of celiac disease to the absorptive lining of the duodenum.
One of the ways that celiac disease can be confirmed is via biopsy which is done on endoscopy if there is a suspicious looking area
The pathology of the tissue when looked at with endoscopy confirms the diagnosis.
Endoscopy allows us to biopsy the duodenum, which will show changes typical for celiac: villous blunting and inflammation. This combined with blood testing is the standard for making a celiac diagnosis.
