Any invasive procedure has risk - however appendectomies are one of the most common procedures that general surgeons perform. It previously was done solely as an open procedure, now laparoscopy has become the gold standard due to lower rates of wound infection, less post operative pain and shorter duration of hospital stay (I send my uncomplicated appendectomy patients home the same day).
