Is it normal for gums to hurt after a filling?

My gums hurt after a filling. Is it normal? What should I do?

It depends on if the filling is below the gum line. Or it could be the start of a cold sore. The best way of knowing for sure is to go back to the same dentist for diagnosis.

There can be some mild aching of gums after a filling. Drilling and placing a band and wedge can irritate the gums for several days. If so you can rinse with warm salt water to decrease the inflammation. If any severe pain or swelling, you should go back and see your dentist to rule out other problems.
Many fillings require a matrix band and wedge to shape the filling, this can crush the soft tissue and cause post-operative discomfort. Warm salt water will help, and ibuprofen is a great anti-inflammatory.
No, unless the cavity was below the gum line. Ask your dentist.
If it is a cavity below the gums or if it is a deep filling it is normal for gums to hurt but I would still contact the dentist who did the filling as they understand the extent and the depth of the cavity. Thanks.
