Hello,

You are experiencing pain a day following a mammogram and want to know if this is normal.

Mammograms are important X-rays used for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Most women do not experience pain with or following this procedure. However, some women report discomfort. One can do a google search using the question “is it normal to have pain following a mammogram?” An excellent website with a discussion of the experiences of women following mammograms can be found on www.healthimages.com.

Many women experience breast tenderness during their menstrual cycles. It might be wise to schedule a mammogram 7-10 days after starting your menses. Hormonal changes in the breast are less prominent at that time. It would also be advisable to discuss your symptoms with the therapist that is performing the exam for ideas on minimizing the discomfort. But this pain should subside in a few days. Please do not let this symptom discourage you from obtaining future mammograms.

Thanks.
