Colon & Rectal Surgeon Questions Colon and Rectal Surgeon

Painless

I've been dealing with bright red/faint red rectum bleeding for years now. It's never in my stool, only in when I wipe and it happens on and off. Using wipes helps but even then a little bit of bright red blood appears sometimes. I've found I have to be super gentle back there. It's painless and I never find blood on my feces, only on the toilet paper every now and then. I don't see any bumps (hemorrhoids) in that area and I don't feel itchy. What could be the cause? My stool has also only recently been soft and liquidy. Which I haven't given much thought to because I also have irritable bowel syndrome, mainly with excessive gas but it doesn't happen often. What's wrong with me?

It's also possible that you have an anal fissure. Recommendation: evaluation to rule out fissure or other causes of bright blood in the stools.
