Tegretol medicine for Epilepsy & Memory Loss?

I had epilepsy since I was 15, I'm now 41. I used a combination of Tegretol and Topamax medicines as per the doctor prescription and the doctor was gradually changing the dose for them. I changed my doctor recently and he removed Topamax from my doses and I now only take Tegretol. My question is, I'm experiencing memory loss for a few years (before I change doctors and my dose is tegretol only). Is this memory loss related to my medicine? Is there better alternative medicine that I can ask my doctor to change me to?

Your memory loss could be from your chronic epilepsy or from the use of the topamax. Please discuss this with your doctor.
Yes, Tegretol can affect memory and Topomax can affect concentration. Some newer drugs may have less of this effect. Some types of Epilepsy itself can sometimes affect memory. Discuss with your neurologist the appropriate drug choice and balancing the risk and benefits of current medication.
