Addiction Medicine Specialist Questions E-Cigarettes

What are the side effects of e-cigarettes?

My husband is a chain smoker and his doctor has now recommended e-cigarettes to start his weaning process. The intent, hopefully, is for him to eventually be off any sort of smoking device altogether eventually. Can e-cigs have any side effects?

E-cigarettes have the same side effects as combusted tobacco but to a reduced extent because of the lower temperatures at which nicotine (and tars - the carcinogenic and lung damaging hydrocarbons foundin tobacco) volatalize.  It is thus thought to be less dangerous than smoked cigarettes.  But they are not WITHOUT danger. There is still nicotine addiction and nicotine effects on the heart and vascular system, and there is a lower level of tars. Since there are other ingredients in the liquids that companies use in their E-cigarettes, and we do not have extensive experience with their side effects, it is hard to make a definitive statement.  However, there is little doubt that vaping tobacco is safer than smoking it.
Not that we know of, but there are not long term studies.

Good question! Vaping is relatively new so there isn't any information about the long term effects. What we do know is that it can cause dry mouth, dry throat, itchy, red skin, dizziness, caffeine sensitivity, allergies, canker sores, black tongue, inflammation of the tongue, sore mouth, chest pain, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, sleeplessness, headache, cough and breathing problems to name a few. I hope this helps!
