Chiropractor Questions Posture

What can I do to correct my posture?

I have been sitting at a desk 40 hours per week for nearly 30 years. This has caused my back to become very hunched. As I get older, I am starting to worry more about my posture. What can I do to help correct it?

Get Chiropractic treatments and do postural exercises.
There are many good exercises and stretches to correct this posture. YouTube has a lot of videos which are very helpful. The main thing is to be consistent with the exercises.
Abnormal posture can put increased stress on certain part of the spine creating dysfunction which can potentially lead to arthritis. Consult a chiropractor to see how you can be helped to prevent further damage.
Posture starts in the lower back. Start with a lumbar chair support and make an effort to push/lean back on it so that your torso sits up straighter.
I would find a good Chiropractor in your area. You will want to insure your alignment is correct and then do exercises to strengthen your back and correct your posture.
First have your posture checked by X-Ray to determine your true posture, then treatment or exercises can be recommended.
Routine adjustments and exercises will help correct and maintain your posture.
An ergonomic office chair would help. Also, see a chiropractor because there will be some degree of spinal distortion and he/she can treat that.
Step 1- Do Posture Exercises Every Morning
Example- chin back exercise- bring back chin eyes up as you're doing them
chest openers- arms out like a T and squeeze scapula together
YLWT exercises which we can show you in our center.
Get up every hour from your desk and stretch your body and move.
Yoga is helpful
Chiropractic care is essential as your posture is your window to health.
Appearance benefits with good posture are obvious, but there are many less-obvious health benefits you should know. Good posture can:

Maintain correct alignment of bones and joints
Reduce stress on ligaments, minimizing risk of injury
Prevent muscle strain, overuse and pain
Conserve energy as muscles are used more efficiently
Decrease abnormal joint wear
Research has shown that poor postures may increase feelings of depression, affect your digestive tract and influence confidence and stress levels.

Signs You have Poor Posture
There are many indicators of poor posture, but some of the more common are hunched shoulders, rounded shoulders, rounded upper back, forward head carriage and arched lower back. Another indicator is back pain. Unsure if you have good posture? Talk to your chiropractor or schedule an appointment for a spinal examination.

Factors that Contribute to Poor Posture
There are several common factors linked to poor posture:

Stress
Obesity
Pregnancy
Weak postural muscles
Abnormally tight muscles
High-heeled shoes
How to Maintain or Correct Posture
The first step is awareness! Bring your attention to your posture as you sit, stand or lie down. If you're sitting, keep both feet on the floor or a footrest, don't cross your legs and use low-back support. While standing, keep your knees slightly bent, relax your arms and pull your shoulders back. When lying down it's critical to choose the right mattress and pillow, and avoid sleeping on your stomach.
