Psychotherapy or psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a form of depth psychology, the primary focus of which is to reveal the unconscious content of a client's psyche in an effort to alleviate psychic tension.
Extraordinarily brilliant question because most people perceive and conceive of this kind of therapy rather differently from each other. In general, the emphasis is on an individual becoming more aware of how their past interactions and traumas have affected their current feelings. Ultimately, this can be used to greater understand one's emotional state in the present day, it’s a fact on behavior in the present day, and helping an individual make choices on future thoughts, feelings, and actions to make a healthier and more contented future.

Hello,

Psychodynamic therapy facilitates a person's awareness and understanding of one's thoughts and feelings. Thus leading to more understanding of one's choices and actions from the past and in the present leading to healthier choices in the present and the future. When you search online, you may want to read an article about it in Psychology Today and a free Chapter from SAMSHA.
Take care and remain safe.

Recommend you get a good book on the subject.
