Cardiothoracic Surgeon Questions Heart Palpitations

Why do I feel palpitations and increased heart rate?

I am a 47 year old woman and I have been having very frequent episodes that cause severe palpitations leading to my heart rate increasing drastically. Even at rest, sometimes my heart rate reaches 160 bpm. Is it a sign of something serious?

If you are experiencing fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness and passing out you need to consult your physician for treatment options. Palpitations can be dangerous at times.

This most likely is atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart beat) and needs to be investigated to find out the reason behind it.
You should see an electrophysiologist who will help you sort out the problem.
Take 500 mg of vitamin C daily and stop taking any caffeine and if you still get them, you need to see a cardiologist.
The symptoms described are classic for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Both are situations that only progress in magnitude if not treated. You need an EKG and or a heart monitor to record and evaluate the heart rhythm.
