The answer is yes, they can be serious. Most of the time, gallstones are asymptomatic meaning it does not cause any symptoms, in this case we leave them alone. They can cause significant inflammation of the gallbladder which is called cholecystitis and will require removal of the gallbladder. They can also called pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) as well as obstruction of the passage of bile from the liver into the small bowel which can lead to infection. Your diet is very important. Should not be eating diet consistent with high fat. If you develop symptoms, you should see PCP or surgeon for further evaluation.
Many people with fall stones are asymptomatic however, some gallstones can turn serious requiring urgent intervention.
Gallstones are only serious if they get large enough to cause symptoms. They can obstruct the cystic duct and cause pain (biliary colic) or inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis). In such cases, surgery (cholecystectomy) is the solution. Most people who get gallstones are overweight or obese. To prevent them, lose weight.
