Allergist & Immunologist Questions Dog allergy

Can you outgrow a dog allergy if you're around dogs?

I used to get allergic reactions to my dogs but now I feel like I might have developed an immunity to them? When they lick me, I no longer break out in hives. Is it possible to outgrow dog allergies or develop an immunity to dogs when you're around them?

Hi,

It is possible for many people to eventually have a variety of allergies, including animal allergies. The problem is that it could take people between 20 and 40 years to do so on their own! Allergen immunotherapy (allergy injections) seeks to accelerate that time table so that the adaptation takes place in six to twelve months rather than 20-40 years! If you are an animal lover that is having difficulty being around animals, a conversation with a local allergist would be a good start.

Hope that helps,
