I am a 40 year old female, I will have a CT scan of my abdomen next week. How long does a CT scan of an abdomen take?

Depends on the speed of the scanner and the length of the detector row. Also if you get IV contrast , they will have to wait a few minutes to let your kidneys and bladder fill a little. Anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. If no contrast, then with most scanners, 5 minutes.
CT scans are typically very rapid. The process of travel, registration, and waiting will be far longer than the study. Typically, these studies are very rapid and efficient.

Thank you for your question. The length of the scan depends on the answer the referring physician is seeking. There are different requests, however, using the modern machines - in general, on average, it is less than 10 mins. You will be pleasantly surprised.
You must drink the contrast for 2 hours and then usually they start an IV, after that it only takes one or two breath holds.
