How long does it take for acne scars to fade?

I am a 28 year old female and I have acne scars. How long does it take for acne scars to fade?

By definition, scars are permanent. Most marks and/or discolorations are not technically scars and will fade with time. That said, the variability of these acne marks combined with the type of skin involved make it impossible to predict with any reliability without the patient in front of me.
Hi,

It depends on the depth and severity of the scarring. There are treatments that may help such as retinoids and peels, but laser is the most effective.

Unfortunately, true scars of all kinds, including those from acne, are permanent. They can certainly be improved significantly with simple and relatively inexpensive and tried and true treatments, such as subcision for boxcar and rolling scars; and TCA CROSS for ice pick scars and very dilated pores. But, they cannot be completely erased. However, if you are talking
about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or post-inflammatory erythema (redness), these kinds of problems generally fade. In patients of skin of color, dark blotches generally take quite a few weeks to fade compared to persons of lighter complexion. Redness, too, generally fades, but it too can take several weeks. Dermatologists have simple in-office treatments and can prescribe prescription medications to speed the fading process.
Hi,

Patients usually refer to post-acne pigmentation as "acne scars," and these can generally fade away within a few months. True acne scars (depressions in the skin), may slightly improve over time (months-years), but likely will need chemical peels, microdermabrasion or other modality to improve. Sunscreen use daily and Retinol qhs will be helpful.

It can take 9-12 months for red or brown spots to go away. If the scars are pitted they may need to be treated with lasers. Hope that helps!
