Psychologist Questions Phobias

I am scared of darkness. Is this normal?

I have a wierd fear of darkness and of closed dark rooms. I begin to sweat and panic. Is it normal or should I actually visit a psychologist to get rid of my fear?

Your reaction to darkness sounds like you are having panic attacks and have a a phobia. I recommend that you seek behavioral therapy.
Hello,

It sounds like your stress response system is being activated when you are in the dark; therefore, you could be responding to a trauma that you may not consciously remember. I would definitely suggest contacting a psychologist in your area.

No, that isn’t "normal," but, fortunately, it is a phobia, and phobias are very treatable. It actually has a name – Achluophobia – but, to make a little joke, it may be easier to remedy than to pronounce. Yes, do make an appointment with a psychologist specializing in anxiety. Hypnosis treatment can be very effective – look on line at the ASCH website to find someone in your area who specializes in phobias. Some people take anti-anxiety medication (prescribed by a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse), but that does not cure the problem, only makes it possible to deal with a specific situation.
Good luck – you can look forward to feeling comfortable in safe, dark places (which is normal!).

Nyctophobia is an abnormal fear of darkness. This type of phobia is often seen in young people, making the sufferer feel sick and may act differently as well. This is often seen in women and children, and although there are various treatments available for this condition, it would still require a complete involvement and dedication from the sufferer.
Depends on how long this has been going on and how old you are.
If this interferes with your ability to adaptively function, then go see a therapist who can help you deal with this fear/anxiety.
When a fear begins to have a negative impact on your life, it is time to seek professional help. There is no reason you should have to go on living with this.
Examine closely your thoughts about the dark because it is the thoughts that have brainwashed you against the dark. Read Dr. David Burns book, Feeling Good. If it doesn't improve see a psychologist.
Many of us have a little bit of what you are experiencing. Get night lights and don’t worry about it much.
