Psychologist Questions Borderline Personality Disorder

Is borderline personality disorder serious?

My father was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and he had it for a long time already. Is this a serious disorder? He's in talk therapy for it now.

Borderline is not a mood disorder, but rather a personality trait which we often have since birth and then can become reinforced as life happens. It is not a mood disorder. Emotional therapy balancing out the inner and outer self, and DBT are suggested
Dear Madam/Sir:

I am sorry to hear that your dad is suffering from the Borderline Personality disorder. I am glad that he is in treatment. I hope that he is seeing a therapist that specializes in working with the Borderline Personality Disorder. It may be a good idea for you to talk to your dad's therapist to find out how serious is his condition. Some of the recommended treatment for this disorder are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I would also recommend that you and the rest of the family members also go for therapy as it will give you needed help.

Take care,

Yes, it is a serious and complicated diagnosis. Personality disorders are pervasive by nature. Borderline is characterized by a fractured sense of identity that is marked by anger, flippant attitudes (hot/cold), and impulsivity. The concern becomes if there are self harm tendencies, which may lead to hospitalization. Dialect behavioral therapy is the gold standard for treatment.

There are variables on this disorder. Borderline Personality Disorder is a Personality Disorder and usually take years to treat. Also, depending on the severity of his symptoms and his willingness to change and get better. Talk therapy is a great way to go and Dialectical Behavior Therapy is the most researched type of therapy with BPD.
Not necessarily! Being older he has learned how to adjust and make things work for him
While talk therapy is an approach used to treat BPD, dialectic behavior therapy has shown to be very helpful.
