Naturopathic Physician Questions Insomnia

What are the naturopathic remedies for my sleep disturbances?

I am suffering from insomnia for the past month, and this is causing me to have a lot of fatigue. I don’t want to resort to sleep medications at such a young age. Are there any naturopathic medicines for insomnia?

Generally it's always best to find out the cause for insomnia such as sleep hygine, stress, digestive issues, hormonal issues, ...
but for temporary insomnia you could start with extended release melatonin and magnesium to help you sleep.
Disordered sleep can have many root causes. Most importantly, you should work to find the root cause of disordered sleep. I suggest you consider black-out curtains in your sleeping space, play on white noise or put a small fan on low, keep your phone at least 10 feet away from you as you sleep, no screen time or TV at least 30 minutes before bed, do some meditation and deep breathing before bed, and finally journal any racing thoughts or issues that can make you anxious. This combination of foundational tools helps the majority of my patients. If you just want help relaxing the mind-body for sleep, the most direct non-prescription medicine I have found is using a cannabis tincture of 1 part THC to 1 part CBD. This is called a 1:1 ratio. When these cannabis compounds are taken in this way, you will not get any "high" from the THC, unlike smoking pot. This is because CBD blocks the receptors in the brain which cause the "high." But what you will get is very relaxed, both in the mind and the body. Start with a few drops, 30 minutes before bed, then asses from there. I hope this helps!
Many times I see in patients that a catabolic imbalance can cause poor sleep patterns. It’s possible that an electrolyte deficiency or sympathetic imbalance may be the cause of insomnia. There are supplements that can help, but we would need to determine which would be appropriate based on your body chemistry. The wrong supplement could result in a worsening of symptoms.
For alternative therapies when other things haven’t worked I offer Alpha
Stim CES therapy for insomnia as well as regenerative acupuncture point
injection therapy.
I would suggest seeing a licensed Naturopathic Doctor to investigate these options.
Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear about your insomnia. I'm in agreement that pharmaceutical sleep aids are not only not addressing the cause of your insomnia, but they aren't without consequence. There are palliative naturopathic remedies such as Valerian, melatonin, and magnesium but those too would not address causation. There's a combo product called Somnium I often prescribe. If the insomnia persists I'd recommend connecting with a practitioner to study causation.

Warmly,
Dr. Neale
While every person is unique it is hard to know *the* cause of your sleep disturbance. Have you been stressed lately? This is a very common cause of sleep issues. A few helpful tips include cool and dark room, relaxation before bed, no alcohol/sugar/caffeine before bed.
MELATONIN HELPS AS WELL AS ANY CALMING HERB SUCH AS THEANINE, PASSIFLORA, OR HOPS. IF STILL NO HELP, TRY ACUPUNCTURE. IT HAS A CALMING EFFECT ON THE BODY. THERE ARE CERTAIN POI NTS IN PARTICULAR THAT WILL HELP, LIKE HT 7 ST 40.

There are a number of different remedies/natural medicines that can be used to treat insomnia. The important thing is to ty and find the underlying cause which can be any number of things. Your naturopathic physician can help you in the area.
Hello, there are many options for helping with insomnia. Naturopathic medicine is tailored to the individual person and focuses on the root cause of their case of insomnia. Treatment options can range from a variety of herbs, melatonin supplements, amino acids and enzymes, naturally produced substances that our body makes to signal our hormones and sleep-cycle pathways, acupuncture and even homeopathy, stress management and more. I highly advise you see a local naturopathic doctor, or you can even schedule a telehealth appointment with me to go over your specific case and provide a treatment plan. Yes there are. Seeing a Naturopathic Doctor can also help you find the route cause of your insomnia and help you overcome it. It may or may not require some supplementation in the beginning.
There are many tools we use to help with insomnia! We often use them to help get people off of sleep medications. I wish I could give you specifics, but I know nothing else about you as a person. For instance, if school/work stress has changed, we would approach this from a perspective of supporting the adrenals during the day. But if it's dietary related, you might just be deficient in key nutrients to make sleep hormones. In that case, we can use amino acids as legos so your body can build its own sleep hormones instead of just pumping you full of a sedative. Some cases are emotional trauma related and we can use herbal formulas to help calm the mind and quiet racing thoughts. But it's hard for me to give a single answer without
knowing what's causing the insomnia. This is where naturopathic doctors are different, we look for the root cause.
Naturopathic medicine can help with insomnia but each case is different so you need to meet with a doctor to determine the cause of your insomnia and work from there.
