Physical Therapist Questions Back Pain

Can physiotherapy help relieve back pain in pregnancy?

I am 5 months pregnant and I am suffering from extreme back pain. The pain becomes intense after I stand or sit for some time. Do you think it is advisable to go for a physiotherapy treatment for correcting back pain during pregnancy?

You should seek care for back pain during pregnancy because the pain can be decreased or eliminated with treatment and because back pain can persist after delivery. A physical therapist will perform an evaluation and then provide treatment to help address the symptoms from manual work to soft tissues and joints, stretching, strengthening exercises and postural/mechanics training. I would strongly advise you should not wait, but seek care soon to help make you more comfortable.
Yes. It is very important for you to contact physical therapist in your area.
Female therapist who is trained in pelvic floor and pre-natal PT is your best choice. PT will help you with managing pain, will make easier delivery, and will help you with post-natal recovery. From your description of the symptoms it sounds like you are experiencing hyper mobility (excessive movement) in your lumbo-sacral junction. It characterizes with increased pain during prolong immobilization. Simple stabilization exercises will help you and will keep your baby safe and happy. Talk to your doctor and ask for the recommendations who to see in your area. Good luck!
Congratulations on having a baby!!

Yes. The pain comes from loosened and overloaded ligaments. Improving muscle support would be very helpful.
Absolutely. You will need to be evaluated to determine the cause of your pain. Most likely in the SI area. May need some hands on treatments along with strengthening exercises. An SI belt may also be appropriate, however, you need to be evaluated.
