Family Practitioner Questions Kidney Stones

How can I prevent kidney stones from recurring?

I keep having kidney stones, and they are almost like reoccurring. They pass naturally but they still cause a lot of pain. What can I do to prevent this?

The first thing for any kidney stones is to drink more fluid. A dark concentrated urine is more likely to have things crystallize out--that is the start of a stone, and the continuation of a stone buildup. If your urine is dark yellow, you are making crystals!! Next is to talk to your doctor to find out what kind of kidney stone you had, to decrease the chances of having others. It is worth investigating, as we have specific things to do with the various kinds of stones.
The SIMPLEST thing you can do is drink enough water daily to KEEP YOUR URINE CLEAR! But, if you have had FREQUENT, RECURRENT stones, then you also may need to see a urologist for some blood and urine tests in order to find out if you need to take any medication and/or go on some type of restricted diet.
More oral fluids and/or citrate.
You can have the stone analyzed. Some can be prevented by medications.
You can have a stone chemically analyzed. Some can be prevented with medication.
