Regular dental cleaning?

During this procedure is numbing medicine used before starting?

No. If you floss everyday between cleanings you should have zero pain. If not, expect some soreness but we never need to numb for a regular cleaning.
During a regular dental cleaning, there is no need for numbing medicine. If the cleaning needs to be a "deep cleaning" due to a lot of tartar present under the gums, some hygienists will give just a little numbing medicine to help with discomfort.
We have several patients who request that we use anesthetic before doing a dental cleaning. Primarily, that is for patients who have had gum disease, lost bone around the teeth, or very infected gums (bleed easily).
For a simple cleaning, no anesthesia is necessary.
