No need
Typically, the endodontist don't want you to take pain medication especially if they haven't seen you for a consultation. The endodontist ave to test and confirm the symptoms that you were experiencing in relation to the clinical test results before arriving at a diagnosis. The pain medication may masks the pain and will not be able to reproduce the symptoms you were experiencing. If you had a consultation and confirmed the tooth that requires the procedure then inquire with the endodontist if you can take the pain medication.
Usually no.
The only thing you should consider taking is a dose of an NSAID-type (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) med (Ibuprofen, Aleve) as long as you don't have any restrictions against taking this medication. The dentist or endodontist will then advise you whether to continue taking the NSAID or another medication. Narcotic or opioid-type medication not only won't help, but it's also a poor choice considering the risks of opioid meds.
Thank you for asking this important question.

The best answer would come from your dentist. Normally, the answer would be no. It would be interesting to know why you need this treatment. If it is the result of decay you would want to read the book: GROWING A HEALTHY CHILD, SECRETS FROM A WISE OLD DOC.
It guides you step by step how to never have another cavity. If you have never had a cavity, congratulations! This book could help you stay that way. Relax; the biggest problem from root canal treatment is fear of the treatment. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be. Do not pre-medicate yourself, however.
It is not a bad idea to take Advil or Tylenol before a root canal. It covers the discomfort instead of chasing it.
It is optional for you to take any pain medication before any dental procedures. It doesn't hurt to be proactive to control the pain. Good luck!
