Periodontist Questions Gum pain

Should I have gum pain after getting a tooth pulled?

I had a tooth extracted last week and I'm still experiencing gum pain when I brush the neighboring teeth. Should I have gum pain after getting a tooth pulled?

Yes. Again it depends on how bad the tooth was, to begin with and the difficulty of the extraction itself.
Yes it is normal it takes time for everything to heal.
Depending on the type of extraction you had, it is possible to have gum pain after. If the extraction was surgical and the gum had to be cut, we would definitely expect gum pain. In some cases, even when the gum was not cut, you may have sensitivity on adjacent teeth after a tooth is taken out. If the pain persists for over a week, I would suggest going back to your dentist and having them reassess to make sure you don't have another infection present.
It can depend on the difficulty of the extraction. If it was fairly simple by 7 days you should be able to brush lightly with very little to no discomfort. If there was tissue elevated with sutures this will take longer. If it persists I would go back and check to make sure the tissue is healing properly
Yes, gum pain and soreness is normal after an extraction for a week to 2 weeks. As long as there is no swelling, then it’s not likely that there is an infection present. You should improve over the next few days to a week.

You can experience discomfort from an extraction for many days depending on the type and severity of the extraction. Your body needs to heal.
