Surgeon Questions Toe pain

My sister has swelling and excessive pain on her toe, which also has pus and blood secreting. Does she need a surgery?

My sister is 24 years old and does not have any heath conditions like diabetes. She has swelling along with a lot of pain with her toe with both pus and blood secreting from it. Will this get healed with medications or does it require a surgery?

Paronychia (infection in the skin around the toenail) is most often due to ingrown toenail. In an otherwise healthy young woman a localized infection should resolved with local wound care and should not need surgery. She should go see he PMD if she develops fever or chills.
Start with antibiotics then follow.
Nothing major, she needs to have a formal incision and drainage done. Healthy, young patients heal very well.
She may need to have surgery. The best thing to do is to go to a med check at a primary care office or the emergency room. At the very least, she may just require antibiotics.
Hi,

From your description (swelling, bleeding, and pus), it sounds like your sister has developed an infection in her toe. Without seeing and examining the toe, and maybe getting an X-ray, it would be impossible to know how severe the infection is. A small, superficial infection may only require antibiotics. Larger, deeper infections (or if the infection develops into an abscess, or pus pocket) require surgery to drain and clean the bacteria and dead tissue. I recommend seeing a doctor right away. Your primary doctor, an emergency doctor, a podiatrist, or general surgeon should be able to diagnose and treat your sister’s infection. Don’t wait, because infections can sometimes spread very quickly.

Wish you and your sister good health,

It requires an MRI first and then most likely surgery.
She needs to go to the emergency room urgently for evaluation. She could have a deep tissue infection of her toe which could potentially spread into her bone (if it has not already done so). This will put her at risk of losing the toe or even seeding her blood and causing sepsis. The emergency room physician will order radiological tests that will help evaluate and diagnose her condition and this will determine her treatment, surgical or otherwise.

Good luck.

Hello,

It is likely that this is an infection that may require a small drainage procedure (or more depending on severity) to remove the infection and prevent progression. She will likely require antibiotics as well.

It is difficult to provide counseling in a vacuum and without seeing the patient, so I would advise, above all else, to seek evaluation in an emergency department.

It is very important that your sister is evaluated by a vascular surgeon. Maybe this could be a vascular problem.
For this condition it is always important to go to the emergency department because this could be a collection of pus that may need drainage. Sometimes the patient also will need to take antibiotics. And sometimes there is also need to remove part of the nail. So it is important to visit your doctor so they can do a better examination.
Maybe she has ingrown toenail.
Sound like this could be osteomyelitis. Get it checked out IMMEDIATELY.

If the infection is in the bone and deep seated, antibiotics will not likely be sufficient.
She just needs a good foot Doctor to take care of things as soon as she can.
