Physiatrist (Physical Medicine) Questions Nerve Damage

Is there a test to diagnose nerve damage?

I have a lot of pain in my legs and the doctors say that this could be because of nerve damage. What tests would they do to confirm this?

Nerve conduction study and electromyography. This is usually done by a physiatrist or a neurologist. Here's a link on how to find a physiatrist near you:

Your nerves conduct nerve impulses through your body. Any problem with this conduction may cause muscle weakness, pain, tingling or any unusual sensation.
Nerve Conduction Velocity NCV / Nerve Conduction Study NCS is the test that measures how fast your nerve impulses travel through your nerves and how strong are these impulses. Test results can determine whether nerves are damaged or not.
A nerve test (EMG) can confirm nerve damage. Often it can determine type and severity of the damage.
Nerve conduction tests are the most common. This test is not painful and will ascertain if indeed you have nerve damage. I would have this scheduled as soon as you can. Pain is very debilitating and the sooner you have a proper diagnosis the better the outcome for you a treatment plan can then be formulated to help you. I do hate how drs give out Information without a definitive diagnosis. I would see a specialist a physiatrist who is conservative and will do the necessary testing. Good luck
There is a test that can help diagnose nerve damage or weakness. It is called an Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Study.
We would perform a nerve conduction test which consists of a series of small electric impulses to determine the speed of your nerves. If they are running slow we will have a diagnosis of polyneuropathy. Treatment consists of medication.
Yes, an electrodiagnostic study is often performed by physiatrists to diagnose nerve problems.
Typically nerve injuries or damage can be evaluated by a nerve conduction study and an EMG. It’s a test performed by neurologists and physiatrists to evaluate how the nerves and muscles are functioning.
An electromyogram (EMG) is a test to diagnose nerve injury or damage. A Neurologist or a Physiatrist are the only physicians who can perform the test.
yes, EMG/NCS
Yes. The nerve damages usually occur because of a reason:
1) Caused by a pinched nerve in the spine either by a disc or arthritis,
2) Caused by specific pathologies affecting the nerves themselves,
3) Caused by a metabolic process such as diabetes, other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or vitamins/minerals deficiencies.
Most of these are usually affect the larger nerves (large fiber neuropathy) that can be evaluated by a test called Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) testing. They are mostly (if not exclusively) by neurologist and Physical Medicine & Rehab Specialists.
Other types of neuropathies may only affect the smaller nerves (small nerve neuropathy) that can be detected by skin biopsies.
I hope this answers your question.
Hi
The best test would be an EMG/Nerve conduction study. This needs to be performed by either a physiatrist or a neurologist

Yes, nerve conduction studies and EMG study.
