What can I expect from a physiatrist visit?

I'm going to a physiatrist to help with some back pain that I've been experiencing since a sports injury. What should I really expect from my first visit?

I am a physiatrist. We are specialists in musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders. Expect time taken for intake of your history, a thorough exam, possibly review of records or any studies you've had. A physiatrist may prescribe therapy, medications such as painkillers or medication for spasticity. They may give you a home exercise program. Where indicated they prescribe splints or braces.
A physiatrist generally takes time to understand your goals, what is wrong and what you cannot do and he or she will be the quarterback for your care, coordinating therapies, injections, surgical referrals, medications, and life style changes to get you to where you want to go with your care.
A physiatrist specializes in muscular, sport injuries, and the like. With an orthopedic surgeon, they particularly focus on functional recovery, assist patients with physical therapy, occupation modification, and mechanical issues contributing to her pain. Bring all of your medical records for your physiatrist visit.
