Pediatrician Questions Eye Discharge

What causes yellow discharge from the eyes?

My daughter is 9 and she has yellow discharge coming from her eyes in the morning. What can be the cause? Should I take her to a doctor or is that normal?

If it is actively draining she could have eye infection and may need to see a doctor. If it is just matter in the corner when she wakes up she could have allergies or eye irritation and usually claritin or zyrtec OTC can help. Make sure her vision is normal and she is not having eye pain. If so, she would need to see a doctor
Yellow discharge is often a sign of inflammation and possible eye infection, such as conjunctivitis. However if your daughter is an infant it could be due to a blocked tear duct, a condition that often resolves on its own. If your child is older than 1 year or if the discharge is abundant or accompanied by eye redness or signs of illness, your child should be seen by your doctor. Hope this helps!
Most likely infectious conjunctivitis.
