General Practitioner Questions Persistent Cough

Why does my cough form mucus?

I've had this coughing fit that pushes mucus up, but not far enough for me to expel that mucus. This cough goes on all day, and so far it has been over a week. The cough hasn't gotten any better, and my chest feels stuffy and tight. Whatever mucus that comes up is slightly yellowish, but mostly clear. When i wake up I'm very congested in my chest and tired (not sleepy, just overall tired). I've had bronchitis once before caused by a sinus infection. But I wasn't sick with anything to my knowledge before this coughing began, and aside from the mornings, I feel generally okay during the day.

You may need to start an antibiotic and may need a chest x-ray
It sounds like you could have a form of bronchitis allergic asthma vs. viral from the many viral illnesses that are present in the community vs. bacterial which is less likely. Any tightness in your chest or difficulty coughing the mucus completely up is likely due asthma. The mucus itself is caused by cells sent from your immune system to fight off the infection or inflammation. I recommend that you see a physician so that he or she can determine whether you need treatment for asthmaallergies, infection or both. Good luck!
