  • Are hot flashes during urination normal?

That is quite unusual. It could be an atypical symptom of infection, but may be a sign of other pelvic issues. You should see your gynecologist for evaluation. READ MORE

  • I am 6 months pregnant and I am suffering from a viral infection. Will the antibiotics have any impact on my baby?

Assuming your doctor knows you are pregnant, I would say the medication is safe, however, many antibiotics should be avoided during pregnancy. What is the name of the antibiotic? READ MORE

  • My periods are irregular. What could be the reason for this?

Many things can cause irregular menses. Be sure to keep a log of menstrual cycles and take this with you to see your gynecologist. READ MORE

  • My periods are delayed by 45 days and my pregnancy test was negative. What could be the cause of my delayed periods?

An ovarian cyst can commonly cause delayed menses, but many other things could be involved. Irregular cycles can significantly increase your risk for uterine cancer. You should make an appointment with your gynecologist. READ MORE

  • Are there any sexual positions which can ensure that I conceive?

Basically you want gravity to be on your side to allow semen the least resistance. However, standing on your head may be uncomfortable. The missionary position followed by relaxing for a short time may be helpful. Many women immediately go to the restroom to clean themselves following intercourse. This should be avoided because you don’t want to wash the sperm away before it has had it’s opportunity to fertilize the egg. It can normally take up to a year to conceive, but many factors are involved. If you have regular, monthly cycles you should take prenatal vitamins and see your gynecologist if unable to conceive within a year, but if your cycles are irregular you should see your gynecologist now. • What causes cramps during pregnancy?

You could be having Braxton-Hicks contractions which occur in virtually every pregnant woman. These are small uterine contractions occurring during the third trimester which do not cause cervical dilation and are equivalent to the uterus “practicing” for labor. However, there are many possible causes which may be detrimental to your pregnancy including infection and premature labor. You should see your obstetrician asap. READ MORE

  • What are the various scans that I have to do in the course of my pregnancy?

Most obstetricians do an early sonogram during the first 3 months to verify dates and a normal, intrauterine pregnancy, then an anatomical screening sonogram between 16-24 weeks. READ MORE

  • Every time I get my period, on the second day I feel like I am going to pass out. Why does this happen?

It’s possible you could be anemic, but no way to know without seeing physician. READ MORE

  • Is severe itching in the vagina during pregnancy a sign of an infection?

It is a sign of infection. It may be minor, commonly yeast, or could be something more serious, but should be evaluated by your obstetrician to be sure. Over the counter yeast medications are safe during pregnancy, but if the itch is caused by something other than yeast it could adversely affect your pregnancy. Get the yeast medication, but make an appointment with your obstetrician as well. READ MORE

  • Can a home pregnancy test show a wrong reading?

No lab test, including home tests are 100% accurate. You should see your gynecologist. READ MORE

  • Why do I have back pain before my periods?

A common cause of menstrual related back pain is endometriosis, but many causes are possible. You should see your gynecologist for treatment. It sounds like the pain is impacting your quality of life. READ MORE

  • I took an emergency contraceptive pill about 62 hours after sex. Will it still work?

The sooner you take the pill, the more likely it is to be successful, but it still may work. Most women ovulate, or release an egg on or around day 14 of the cycle. This means 14 days after the first day of the last period. The only time women are able to conceive is during an approximate 48 hour window surrounding the time of ovulation, so if the time of the broken condom was not within that window your chances of not getting pregnant are much greater. Check a pregnancy test 10-14 days after. READ MORE

  • What other options do I have to prevent pregnancy?

There are many forms of contraception available including intrauterine devices and progestin only methods, but birth control pills (bcp’s) are, in fact, quite safe for most women and are utilized to treat many gynecological issues that can ultimately cause infertility and major quality of life altering symptoms. BCP’s have been proven to not cause weight gain. Additionally, they reduce the risk for ovarian cysts and cancer, uterine cancer, acne, and abnormal hair growth. They make periods shorter, lighter, and very regular. And they have never been associated with any increased risk of any cancer. In women who have undiagnosed endometriosis or fibroids they may be responsible for saving fertility. See your gynecologist for all the options, but don’t write off bcp’s due to common incorrect rumors. READ MORE

  • I am suffering from either hemorrhoids or anal skin flap. How can I know the difference?

The most common cause is hemorrhoids, but rectal bleeding is also, commonly the first sign of colon or GI cancer. The only way to confirm your diagnosis is to see your physician. You should have this checked immediately. Kathie Boyd READ MORE

  • Airport security and being pregnant

Body scanners are generally thought to be safe during pregnancy, but there are no long term studies as yet, so nobody really knows absolutely. Metal detectors are completely safe and pregnant women can request to be excluded from scanning and be checked only by metal detectors. This would be most important during the first 3 months of pregnancy while organs are being developed in the baby. Sent from Kathie Boyd READ MORE

  • Did my dental x-rays harm my baby? (first trimester)

The standard lead apron is designed to protect your entire torso including the ovaries and uterus. Also, the amount of radiation exposure from one Xray is minimal and unlikely to cause any damage. You should see your obstetrician and advise him or her of the incident. They may want to do additional testing. READ MORE

  • Skin rash during pregnancy?

They could be related or the rash could be a sign of many other issues. You should see your obstetrician for evaluation immediately. READ MORE

  • What if I miss a week straight of birth control pills?

First, you should use another form of protection such as condoms until you have completed an entire month of birth control pills. Seven pills at one time is not a good idea. You should simply start a new pack, but be aware you could get pregnant during the first new pack, hence the condoms. Carrying your pills in your purse or in your cell phone case is a good way to avoid leaving them behind. Even though pills can be forgotten or left behind they are the best form of contraception due to the many good side effects including more regular, lighter, shorter and less painful periods, reduced risks for ovarian and endometrial cancers, reduced risk for acne and abnormal hair growth, and the absence of increased weight gain. • RA and pregnancy

You are correct regarding the use of methyltrexate in pregnancy as well as many other commonly used drugs in RA patients. In fact many RA drugs must be discontinued many months prior to conception to ensure complete clearance. Drugs used in pregnancy include corticosteroids and NSAIDS, but your obstetrician will work closely with your rheumatologist in determining which drugs are best for you as an individual. Fortunately, RA symptoms tend to improve during pregnancy due to naturally occurring substances produced as a result of the pregnancy. I urge you to consider pregnancy earlier rather than later due to increasing risks with increased age and you should see your gynecologist for preconception counseling prior to stopping any contraceptive method you may be using. • Vaginal warts

The procedures for removing genital warts are performed under anesthesia, so procedural pain is typically not an issue. Pain after the procedure is managed with both oral and topical medications, but is usually minimal. There are multiple ways to treat genital warts which do not always involve procedures. You should see your gynecologist to see if you are a candidate for topical therapy with one of the antiviral creams. READ MORE
