Carries, or "cavities," is a contagious disease and can affect not only the adjacent teeth, but also those throughout your and your significant other's mouth, as the bacteria causing problems is increased when you have an infection. If your teeth are damaged due to trauma, the effect on other teeth will typically be minimal, assuming they are healthy. However, if the trauma creates a space that packs food or reduces the distribution of chewing forces, those things can cause damage to other teeth.

How do I keep food from getting under my partial denture?

Depending on how the partial is made and what teeth it is replacing, sometimes there is very little that can be done to completely avoid food getting under the partial. Making sure it fits as well as possible, meaning it fits the tissue well and fits in place with minimal movement will reduce the opportunity for food to get under it. If it doesn't fit the tissue well, having it relined could help significantly. Unfortunately, because the tissues of the mouth have a certain amount of give to them, it is nearly impossible to completely prevent food from getting under a partial. If it were to fit tight enough to completely prevent food entering, it would most likely result in the partial creating sore areas. Frequent rinsing will help dislodge food from under the partial if it continues to be an irritation.

Dental implants are typically titanium so are directly affected by very little, however, nicotine has a profound effect on the oral soft tissues (gums). It reduces the blood flow thereby reducing their ability to respond as they normally should. This would affect the gums' ability to heal around the implant and also the blood supply to the underlying bone interfering with its ability to adapt and stay tight against the implant.

I'm assuming you are referring to getting the implant placed, not restored. Implant placement has very similar or less post-treatment recovery as an extraction. The restoration phase is typically not painful at all. It is normal to have a moderate "toothache" for a day or two after implant placement. Depending on what was done to access the area, the gums can be sore and tender considerably longer. If extensive work has to be done to the gums in order to place the implant, the soreness can last up to a week or so.

There are lots of variables to consider when trying to predict how long one will be uncomfortable after an extraction (the bone graft usually reduces the pain and decreases the healing time). Typically the area will be tender for about a week to 10 days, meaning if you touch it either with your finger, tongue, or food you will have some discomfort. The most severe pain usually lasts about two days and can most often be managed with over the counter medications (advil and tylenol). Of course all this depends on how well you follow the post procedure instructions as well.

Dentistry is typically done with local anesthesia which is extremely safe and when administered properly can be completely painless. If you are concerned about “being put to sleep” for a more involved procedure, discuss your concerns with the one administering the medication. Many of the drugs used in dentistry to make you comfortable have a more profound effect on keeping you from remembering what happened then actually putting you “to sleep”. Even with wisdom tooth extraction, most patients will walk from the treatment room to the recovery area they just won’t remember doing so. There are those who have dental treatment without anesthesia and say it’s not that big of a deal. Not my personal recommendation but also not as uncommon as one would imagine.

What should a tooth extraction look like when healing?

There are many phases of healing from a dental extraction and it depends on how complex and involved the extraction was and whether or not anything was done to fill the extraction READ MORE
There are many phases of healing from a dental extraction and it depends on how complex and involved the extraction was and whether or not anything was done to fill the extraction site after the extraction. A site that is not filled typically starts looking like it is filled with grape jelly and has red gums around it. As the “jelly” reduces the gum turns more pink and a slight to moderate indent will appear. As the gums continue to turn more pink the indent will decrease and eventually (may take years) become even with the surrounding gums. If something is done to fill the extraction site, there is typically the same process without the “jelly” and it tends to be faster with less indentation. If a membrane is used you may see something white or yellow in the area of the extraction until the gums close over the site.

The saying goes "you only need to floss the teeth you want to keep." Cleaning our mouth is a matter of disrupting the bacterial film that forms on our teeth before it can erode the enamel and cause damage. The large smooth surfaces of our teeth, when aligned properly, are kept fairly clean simply by the actions of our tongue and cheeks through talking, chewing, etc. The crevices and areas where food and bacteria can get trapped or be protected from disruption are where cavities are most likely to form. Brushing or using a water flosser at the gum line helps reduce the damage there but a tooth brush will only reach so far between the teeth. That is where floss comes in. By sliding the floss along the tooth surfaces between the teeth the bacteria is disrupted before it can cause damage. If you never floss, you simply increase the odds of getting cavities between your teeth.

The effectiveness, accuracy, and efficiency of orthodontic treatment is directly correlated with the amount of time the appliances are in the mouth. A big advantage of Invisalign over traditional wire orthodontics is the ability to take them out to make brushing and especially flossing easier. The biggest disadvantage is that they don't have to be worn all the time. It is normal to recommend Invisalign be worn AT LEAST 22 hours a day. So, yes, you can take them out at night and miss out on all that time they are supposed to be repositioning your teeth, it will slow the process, and decrease the likelihood you will get the results you are wanting. But if none of that matters you CAN leave them out at night.

A dentist will typically drill prior to placing a filling or repairing a tooth to remove all the infected tooth structure. Dental decay or caries is an infectious invasive disease that destroys tooth structure. When it first effects the tooth structure it weakens it, then as the bacteria progress they invade the tooth structure living in the weakened area. From there the invasion continues and the damage deepens and broadens. The dentists goal is to remove all the infected tooth structure to eliminate the destruction so not only does he/she need to fill the damaged portion but remove the infected portion so the damage does not progress.

Without knowing the type of jaw surgery to which you refer, it is hard to answer with any degree of certainty. Mouthwash containing alcohol and drinking alcohol should be avoided for 36-48 hours after any extraction or surgical procedure where the gums are cut. Waiting up to 72 hours decreases the chance of the desired clot dissolving prematurely and will help prevent a "dry socket". Asking the surgeon performing the procedure will give you the most accurate response.

A bone graft site is treated very much like an extraction site. Avoiding alcohol, creating suction (drinking through a straw), carbonation, and playing with or causing trauma to the area increases the likelihood it will heal well as quickly as possible. A soft diet can be resumed soon after the procedure. I recommend waiting until the anesthesia is completely worn off to chew anything. This helps avoid accidentally chewing on your lip or tongue. If you need to get some nourishment, drinking a smoothie or protein shake (not through a straw) is a good way to get nutrients into your system. Once you are no longer numb avoiding the area, especially with anything hard or chewy is recommended. Once it begins to heal you can let comfort be your guide as to what you can eat in that area and what you should avoid.

Depending on what the implant will be used for and the hardness of the bone determine how much bone is needed to have a successful stable implant. If there is not enough bone in the desired area there are procedures that can be done to augment or add height and width to the area requiring the implant. Standard implants, which are typically used to replace teeth are best with at least 8 mm length/depth and 7 mm width of bone. Implants done solely to support dentures can be done in slightly narrower bone. More bone is almost always better.
