Do braces affect your face shape?

I am a 27 year old female. I want to get braces now. Do braces affect your face shape?

When braces are coupled with either functional jaw orthopedics or myofunctional therapy dramatic facial changes can frequently be observed. However, typically a 3mm tooth movement results in only a 1mm soft tissue change in the face.
Hello, braces can have some mild effects on the lower part of the face. Teeth are the primary support for the lips, so in some cases moving the teeth can change the lip support. There are cases where orthodontists extract teeth to move them back for improved lip esthetics and alternatively sometimes the teeth are advanced to improve lip support. If larger changes are desired then sometimes braces are used in combination with surgery to move the teeth and jaws. This can lead to significant changes in the lips and chin for a patient. Most surgical cases are situations where there is a significantly small chin or overly strong chin. If you are considering orthodontic treatment, I highly recommend that you meet with an orthodontist to discuss a treatment plan for you and your teeth. An orthodontist could easily explain which changes you might expect depending on your treatment needs. I wish you luck! -John
Orthodontic tooth movement can affect the shape of your face basically in the area below your nose and above your chin. The way in which the shape of your face is affected depends upon the way the teeth are moved.  As an example, if permanent teeth are extracted, one facial result might be a reduction in the protrusion of the lips.
In most cases braces don’t have any significant impact on face shape. In so cases however braces can move teeth in ways that can effect appearance. An example of this would be pushing the teeth forward to increase lip support or extracting teeth and pulling the front teeth back to reduce lip protrusion.
Usually braces do not change the shape of your face unless some teeth are extracted in the process.

A lot depends on your particular problem but more importantly on the treatment plan. Some patients may experience very mild profile changes depending upon the treatment plan and the way the teeth are moved. One can also experience sight vertical changes in facial height again depending upon how the teeth are being moved. Generally any facial changes are very small and hardly noticeable. The theory behind all of it is that the teeth support the lips and if the teeth are moved a great distance forward or backward; and the patient has a certain type of facial musculature some changes might occur. You orthodontist should be able to explain this.
Should not unless you have extremely thin lips or cheeks. If your treatment plan involves surgery or TAD’s, there may be some positive changes in your facial structure post-treatment.

Short answer; it depends. People with thin tissue genetics can see more of a change than people with thick tissue genetics. And I'm not talking about body type or weight. Usually the changes are not perceptible because we're talking about a couple millimeters.
