Psychiatrist Questions Dieting

How can I get my child on a diet?

I want my son on a diet because how he eats is just harming him physically and mentally. What can I do to help convince him? He's 12 years old, overweight, and his diet consists of fast food.

At twelve, he is incapable of purchasing his own food; therefore, you are in complete control of his food choices. If you do not purchase fast food, and if you stock your house only with healthy foods, your problem will eventually work itself out. Will he escalate bad behaviors in order to get you to buy him the foods he wants? Absolutely. Is it worth it to resist his bad behaviors and do what's right for him, no matter how difficult it is for you? Absolutely. And are you modeling good habits for him? Children often model the behavior of their parents. Do you eat a healthy diet? Do you exercise regularly? Please act now, and do so with the assistance of a therapist or coach. Once he's of driving age, you'll have much less control over his habits.
I wish you the best of luck.

You would be the best example to motivate your son to stop eating fast food, so how are your food habits? Who buys him the fast food? What kind of foods do you store in your pantry and cook to your family?
Talking to your son about the complications of obesity like heart disease and diabetes may help also ask his pediatrician to discuss with him diet and exercise
This can be difficult. Approaching adolescence, your son is going to become more and more focused on independence. At this point, your best hope is to focus on home cooked meals and eliminate any money he has to buy fast food. It will be a struggle at first and you will need the support of the other family members.
Hi,

This requires a proper consultation with a dietitian to discuss about the proper way and strategies for healthy eating, physical activity, etc.
Try hiding all snacks and things not healthy in the house and tell him no more fast foods unless he gets it himself. You will have to change your diet also where just healthy foods are in the house

You have to change lifestyle habits and consult a nutricionist. Also give him active recreational activities.
