Psychiatrist Questions Depression

How is depression treated in teens?

My son is a teenager, 16 years old, and has been diagnosed by his doctor with depression. We're treating it with counseling, but are there other interventions for teens with depression? And also, are there any treatments that can treat depression completely?

Depression is treated with medication when it is appropriate especially if counseling is not doing enough. Yes, depression can be cured.
There is always medication, but with over 40 years of treating teen-age depression it should be reserve for those times when the depression is interfering with functioning. Medication only works on alleviating Psychotherapy, getting to the root of the problem, and if possible fixing the cause of the depression is still the best treatment.
You live in America and medical doctors like to put people on medication, especially adolescents at times and that is not always good. Going through adolescence makes one depressed at times and you might want to not try too hard right now

If severe, a combination of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology may be needed. If medication is ineffective, consider TMS or ECT.
