Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (Pediatric) Questions Ear Infections

How long does it take for a double ear infection to go away?

We took my 3-year-old to the doctor once he was complaining about pain in both of his ears. He had a double ear infection, and now he's on treatment for it. With the treatment, how long do you think it could go away? It's only the first day of treatment and he's still crying from the pain.

Ear infections are very common in young children. They are usually treated for 10 days and follow up in the office after completion of the anabiotic. At that time most of the year infections are cured however there are occasions when the child may need an additional medication to clear up any remaining redness and or fluid in the ear
You may have to give tylenol or motrin with the antibiotics. By 3 days he should be better. If not, he may need a change in antibiotics
Normally, it takes a day or two for the pain to resolve, but can take up to a week for the infection to be cured. We usually use from 5 to 10 days of antibiotic therapy when we treat ear infections. Most actually resolve without therapy.
