Colon and Rectal Surgeon Questions Constipation

What can be the impact of long term constipation?

My girlfriend has been suffering from prolonged constipation for over 8 years now. She goes around once per week but feels okay otherwise so she doesn't want to see a specialist. What will be its impact on her body?

Constipation can have many consequences on your GI system overall. Low fiber Diet is the most common reason for it. Some underlying conditions can cause constipation such as a malfunctioning thyroid gland. It’s important to get checked if changing diet doesn’t fix it.
No one knows the long-term impact, though, if she does not have any symptoms, this may be her individual normal. Her primary care can check to make sure she does not have thyroid or parathyroid hormone imbalances.
